Biological Technician (Plants)

The main duties of this position include but are not limited to assisting with invasive vegetation management activities with teams at four parks in the Metro Boston area, with a focus at Minute Man National Historical Park. Invasive plant management follows NPS guidelines for Integrated Pest Management (IPM), including documenting native and non-native plant species and locations; identifying best treatment methods for invasive plants; chemical and mechanical plant treatments; documentation using GPS, GIS, and database equipment; and completing annual reports. Field work involves the use of a variety of equipment including saws, brush cutters, spray equipment, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and vehicles. The position involves working with other team members to collect, record and analyze data, prepare reports, and identify common vegetation, wildlife, and ecological communities. Physical Demands:
The work requires regular physical exertion such as walking or climbing over wet, rough, uneven and/or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping or reaching to observe, collect and/or record field data; or in some situations the work may require physical exertion to scuba dive or operate a boat. Moderately heavy items, such as equipment packs weighing up to 50 pounds, must be lifted and carried on a regular basis. May be required to hike several miles in a day. Working Conditions:
The work environment varies from office/laboratory settings to field sites. The work performed in the field involves regular and recurring exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects and wild animals. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. Qualifications:
Experience:
At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level. Specialized experience for this position is work involving one or more aspects of resource management such as:
using technology to collect and analyze field data; performing vegetation inventories, studies, and surveys and recommending solutions for solving resource management issues; leading site rehabilitation through soil preparation, native seed dispersal, live planting and weeding; prescribing/applying/performing a variety of manual, mechanical, chemical, and/or bio-control methods in planned management of exotics (non-natives), native species, and/or weeds. -OR- EDUCATION:
Have successfully completed one full year of graduate level education or an internship which is directly related to hours in any combination of scientific and technical courses in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, ecology, or mathematics; and at least 6 semester hours of this graduate coursework was in plant or botany-related subjects. -OR- COMBINATION:
Have an equivalent combination of education and experience. For example, I have 6 months of the specialized experience described in A above (50% of the experience requirement), and 12 hours of graduate study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 3 semester hours was in plant or botany-related subjects (50% of the related coursework required). The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
